Bronze, Silver, or Gold: Which Health Insurance Plan Fits You?

Stacks of gold, silver and bronze medals on a table

Choosing a Florida Marketplace plan? Bronze, Silver, and Gold describe how a plan shares covered medical costs with you. The metal level does not rate the quality of your doctors or care.[1]

The right choice depends on your budget, expected care, provider network, and eligibility for financial assistance.

Bronze: Consider what you could pay when you need care

Bronze plans generally leave you responsible for a larger share of covered medical costs. Compare the premium savings against the deductible and other charges you might face if you need treatment.

Silver: Check eligibility for extra savings

Silver plans deserve a close look if your application shows eligibility for cost-sharing reductions. These savings can reduce deductibles, copays, and coinsurance, but you generally must select a Silver Marketplace plan to receive them.[1]

Gold: Compare the full-year cost

Gold plans generally cover a larger share of covered medical expenses than standard Bronze or Silver plans. Compare the actual premium and benefits: a higher metal level is not automatically the best deal for every household.[1]

Compare actual plans before choosing

Look at the monthly premium after any tax credit, the deductible, specialist and prescription costs, and the out-of-pocket maximum. Then confirm your doctors and medications. Benefits and prices vary even within the same category.[2]

For example, if you expect regular specialist visits, compare what those visits would cost under each plan rather than deciding from the premium alone. If your budget is tight, consider what you could afford during an unexpected medical event.
