How to Check Whether Your Doctor Accepts a Marketplace Plan

Want to keep your doctor when changing health insurance? Check the specific Marketplace plan before enrolling. A doctor may accept one plan from an insurance company but participate differently in another network.
Start with the exact plan name
Write down the insurance company, full plan name, network, and coverage year. If available, keep the plan ID. Asking only “Do you take this insurance company?” may not give you the answer you need.
When comparing Marketplace plans, review the provider directory and plan documents. HealthCare.gov also offers tools for checking doctors, facilities, and prescriptions.[1]
Confirm with both the insurer and the office
Search the insurer’s directory for your doctor’s name and the location you use. Then call the doctor’s billing office and the insurer to confirm participation in that exact plan and network for the upcoming year.
Ask whether the doctor is accepting patients under that plan. Save the date, representative’s name, and any confirmation number for your records. Networks can change, so reconfirm when scheduling care.
Check more than your primary doctor
Review your specialists, preferred hospital, laboratory, and imaging center. Check whether your plan requires referrals or prior authorization for the care you expect to need. Network rules vary by plan.[1]
Bring your prescription list, too. Review each medication’s formulary status, pharmacy options, and any approval requirements before making a decision.
