Lost Your Job-Based Health Insurance in Florida? Your Next Steps

Losing a job can also mean losing health insurance. If your employer coverage is ending, check your replacement options promptly. You may be able to enroll in a Florida Marketplace plan without waiting for annual Open Enrollment.

Confirm when your coverage ends

Ask your employer for the exact last day of insurance and written confirmation. Your final workday and coverage end date may differ. Keep that information for your enrollment application.

Check your Marketplace enrollment window

Loss of qualifying job-based coverage generally creates a Special Enrollment Period extending 60 days before and 60 days after the coverage loss.[1] Losing coverage after quitting or being fired can qualify; losing a job without losing coverage is different.[2]

Contact an enrollment professional before your current plan ends. Marketplace coverage generally begins on the first of a month, so a midmonth loss can leave a gap. Confirm your effective date and pay any required first premium on time.[2]

Compare COBRA and other available coverage

COBRA may allow you to keep your former employer’s plan temporarily, usually at your own full premium cost plus an administrative fee. Compare it with available Marketplace options and any coverage through a spouse’s employer.[2]

Before ending COBRA, check your enrollment rights. Voluntarily dropping it early generally does not create a new Marketplace enrollment opportunity.[3]

Estimate your income for the whole year

Marketplace savings use your expected annual tax-household income, including earnings received before leaving work. An offer of qualifying, affordable coverage through a spouse’s job can affect eligibility for savings.[2]
